The RTITB Sideloader (Category C1, C2) training course provides the essential skills and legal knowledge to safely operate side-loading forklifts, which are specifically designed for handling long or bulky loads like timber and piping.

Course Types & Duration

Course length varies based on the operator's prior experience:

Novice (3–5 Days): For beginners with no prior side loader experience.

Existing/Experienced (2–3 Days): For operators with informal experience but no formal certification.

Conversion (1–2 Days): For certified operators of other lift trucks (e.g., counterbalance) moving to sideloaders.

Refresher (1 Day): For previously certified operators renewing their license (recommended every 3 years).

Core Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

Identify all key components and controls of the machine.

Perform thorough pre-use inspections and routine maintenance checks.

Manoeuvre safely in open and confined yard environments.

Handle long or wide loads securely, including stacking and unstacking in racking systems.

Apply weight assessment techniques to maintain truck and load stability.

Understand legal responsibilities under HSE ACoP L117 and other relevant legislation.

Course Content Highlights

The curriculum combines theory (20%) and practical (80%) sessions:

Safety Code: General rules for safe operation and hazard awareness.

Hydraulic Controls: Precision operation of the reach and tilt functions.

Load Handling: Techniques for bulk stacking and lorry loading/unloading.

Stability Factors: Understanding the center of gravity and causes of instability.

Assessment & Certification

Candidates must pass three mandatory assessments:

Theory Test: An associated knowledge examination.

Pre-use Inspection Test: A practical check of the machine's safety features.

Practical Skills Test: A demonstration of basic operating and load-handling skills.

Successful candidates are registered on the RTITB National Operators Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an internationally recognized certificate valid for 3 years.
