pedestrian truck training

RTITB Pedestrian Forklift training (often referred to as Pedop, POET, or Stacker training) provides operators with the skills to safely operate pedestrian-controlled lift trucks. As of January 19, 2026, RTITB training materials are updated to reflect the latest ABA workplace transport equipment groupings, ensuring all instruction remains compliant and audit-ready.

Equipment Categories

This training covers several ABA (Accrediting Bodies Association) categories for pedestrian-operated machinery:

A1: Pedestrian-operated pallet trucks (low level).

A3: Pedestrian-operated counterbalance forklifts.

A5: Pedestrian-operated pallet stackers.

A7: Pedestrian reach trucks.

Z1: Pedestrian-operated manual pallet trucks (pump trucks).

Course Durations

Course length varies based on the candidate's experience and the specific machine type:

Novice: 1–2 days for low-level pallet trucks; up to 5 days for more complex stacker or reach variants.

Experienced: 1 day for operators with 6+ months of experience but no formal certificate.

Refresher: 0.5–1 day for currently certified operators renewing their registration.

Conversion: 1–2 days for operators transitioning from a different truck type.

Core Syllabus

The course includes both theoretical instruction and practical exercises:

Safety & Theory: Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER.

Operational Knowledge: Understanding truck stability, load assessment, and battery care/maintenance.

Pre-Use Inspection: Conducting vital daily checks to identify safety-critical defects.

Practical Maneuvering: Steering in forward and reverse, navigating chicanes, and operating in narrow aisles.

Load Handling: Safe techniques for picking up, transporting, and stacking loads at various heights (ground, eye, or high level).

Certification and Assessment

To qualify, candidates must pass three mandatory assessments:

Written Theory Test: A 25-question exam requiring an 80% pass mark.

Pre-Use Inspection Test: A practical check of 14 safety-critical mandatory components.

Basic Operating Skills Test: A practical assessment of maneuvering and load-handling skills.

Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB eCertificate and eCard, which are valid for three years.
