order picker training

RTITB Order Picker training provides operators with the skills to safely use machinery designed for picking items from warehouse racking at various heights. As of January 2026, the course strictly follows the ABA workplace transport grouping codes to ensure compliance with the latest safety standards.

Equipment Categories

Courses are typically categorized by the height at which the machine operates:

E0/A2 (Low Level): Often referred to as a LLOP (Low Level Order Picker).

E1 (Medium Level): For picking at heights up to 2.5 meters.

E2 (High Level): For picking at heights exceeding 2.5 meters.

Note: Completing the High Level (E2) course generally authorizes an operator to use all three categories.

Course Durations

The duration of the training is determined by the candidate’s existing skill level:

Novice Course: 3–5 days for beginners with no prior experience.

Experienced Operator Course: 2–3 days for those with experience but no formal certification.

Conversion Course: 1–2 days for operators already certified on other lift trucks.

Refresher Course: 1 day (or 7.5 hours) for currently certified operators renewing their license.

Core Syllabus

Training involves a mix of theoretical classroom learning and practical exercises:

Safety & Theory: Legislation (Health and Safety at Work Act 1974), operator responsibilities, and factors affecting truck and load stability.

Machine Knowledge: Familiarization with controls, instruments, and hydraulic systems.

Pre-Use Inspection: Conducting daily safety checks, including security of safety gates and guidance systems.

Maneuvering: Steering in forward and reverse, navigating confined areas, and operating on inclines.

Operational Skills: Safe picking techniques at height, vehicle loading/unloading, and battery maintenance/recharging.

Certification and Assessment

To qualify, candidates must pass three distinct assessments:

Written Theory Test: Covers safety codes and operational theory.

Pre-Use Inspection Test: A practical check of mandatory safety-critical components.

Basic Operating Skills Test: A practical exam requiring the safe completion of set tasks.

Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB certificate and eCard, typically valid for three years.
