RTITB Counterbalance Forklift training provides operators with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to safely operate one of the most common types of workplace machinery. As of January 19, 2026, the course follows updated ABA workplace transport category codes to maintain compliance with industry standards.
Course Formats and Durations
The length of the course is determined by the operator's prior experience:
Novice Course (4–5 Days): For beginners with little or no experience.
Experienced Operator Course (2–3 Days): For those with significant experience but no formal certification.
Refresher Course (1 Day): For currently certified operators renewing their license (recommended every 3–5 years).
Conversion Course (1–2 Days): For operators transitioning from a different truck type (e.g., Reach Truck to Counterbalance).
Core Syllabus
The training covers key legal and operational areas, including:
Regulatory Compliance: Understanding responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER.
Machine Knowledge: Controls, instruments, and the "Stability Triangle" (weight assessment and stability factors).
Pre-Use Inspection: Daily maintenance checks, identifying defects, and refueling/recharging (Diesel, LPG, or Electric).
Practical Operation: Steering (forward and reverse) in open and confined areas, vehicle loading/unloading, and stacking/destacking at various heights (low, eye, and high level).
Assessment and Certification
Candidates are evaluated through three distinct assessments:
Written Theory Test: A multiple-choice exam covering safety codes and operational knowledge.
Pre-Use Inspection Test: A practical check of the machine's safety and serviceability.
Practical Operating Test: A skills-based assessment where candidates must complete tasks without exceeding a set number of penalty points (typically 40).
Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB eCertificate and eCard, which are valid for three years.
