RTITB Multidirectional Forklift training (often referred to as "Combilift" or "4-way steer") is a specialized course for operating trucks that can move in all directions, including laterally. These machines are primarily used for handling long or wide loads (such as timber or piping) in narrow aisles.
Equipment Categories
As of 2026, RTITB materials (Course LTG11) cover three specific ABA categories for multidirectional machinery:
M1: Multidirectional Counterbalance Lift Trucks.
M2: Multidirectional Sideloaders.
M3: Multidirectional Reach Trucks.
Course Durations
Training length is determined by the operator's existing skill level:
Novice: 3–5 days (for beginners with no prior experience).
Experienced: 2–3 days (for regular operators without formal certification).
Conversion: 1–2 days (for operators already certified on other lift trucks, e.g., standard counterbalance).
Refresher: 1 day (for those renewing their current registration).
Core Syllabus
The course combines theoretical classroom learning with practical hands-on exercises:
Safety & Legislation: Understanding responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and PUWER/LOLER regulations.
Machine Stability: Advanced instruction on the "Stability Triangle" specifically related to multi-directional movement and high-level stacking.
Pre-Use Inspection: Conducting daily safety checks and identifying hydraulic or electrical defects.
Maneuvering: Navigating long loads through restricted areas, including steering in all directions (forward, reverse, and sideways).
Load Handling: Safe techniques for picking up, transporting, and stacking long or awkward loads in racking or freestanding environments.
Certification and Assessment
To pass, candidates must complete three assessments:
Written Theory Test: A multiple-choice exam on safety and operational codes.
Pre-Use Inspection Test: A practical demonstration of daily vehicle checks.
Practical Operating Test: A skills assessment in a simulated warehouse environment.
Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB eCertificate and eCard. Registration is valid for three years, after which refresher training is required to remain compliant with industry standards.
