scissor lift training

RTITB Scissor Lift training is a comprehensive course designed to equip operators with the skills and theoretical knowledge required to safely operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in the 3A category (Mobile Vertical). Accredited by the RTITB, this course ensures compliance with current health and safety legislation, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Work at Height Regulations.

Course Overview

The training typically takes one day for experienced operators but can extend up to five days for novices. It is available at accredited training centers or on-site at customer premises. As of January 2026, RTITB materials reflect the latest updated workplace transport equipment groupings to ensure continued accuracy and compliance.

Core Syllabus

The course is divided into three key areas:

Theoretical Knowledge: Includes an introduction to MEWP types, relevant regulations (LOLER, PUWER), operator responsibilities, and hazard identification (e.g., ground conditions, overhead obstructions).

Pre-Use Inspection: Training on how to conduct daily safety checks, identify defects, and understand machine stability and weight assessments.

Practical Operation: Hands-on instruction in starting, stopping, driving, and steering the machine, as well as maneuvering in confined or elevated spaces.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, candidates should be able to:

Safely position and operate the scissor lift in relation to a specific task.

Demonstrate proficiency in using hydraulic controls and emergency lowering procedures.

Understand the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety harnesses where applicable.

Perform battery charging and general machine maintenance.

Certification and Assessment

The course concludes with a written knowledge test and a practical skills assessment. Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB eCertificate and eCard, which are typically valid for three years.
