RTITB Reach Truck training provides operators with the specialized skills needed to operate forklifts designed for narrow-aisle warehousing. As of January 19, 2026, the course follows updated ABA workplace transport category codes, which have merged certain height restrictions to streamline certification for modern logistics environments.
Equipment Categories
RTITB covers three primary ABA (Accrediting Bodies Association) categories for reach trucks:
D1: Rider-operated electric reach trucks (Standard height). As of January 2026, the D2 category has merged into D1, removing the previous 8-meter height restriction for this category.
D2: (Formerly reach trucks over 8m; now largely consolidated into D1).
D3: Rider-operated stand-on reach trucks.
Course Durations
Course length is determined by the candidate’s existing skill level and group size:
Novice Course (3–5 Days): For beginners with little or no prior experience.
Experienced Operator Course (2–3 Days): For those with significant experience but no formal certification.
Refresher Course (1 Day): For currently certified operators renewing their license (recommended every 3 years).
Conversion Course (1–2 Days): For operators certified on another truck type (e.g., counterbalance) transitioning to reach trucks.
Core Syllabus
The training involves theoretical study and practical exercises tailored to high-density storage environments:
Specialized Stability: Understanding the different center of gravity in reach trucks compared to standard forklifts.
Narrow Aisle Operation: Precision steering (forward and reverse) and maneuvering in confined spaces.
Load Handling at Height: Techniques for extending and retracting the mast to safely stack and de-stack at various racking levels.
Pre-Use Inspection: Conducting daily safety checks, including the reach mechanism, hydraulic systems, and battery maintenance.
Regulatory Compliance: Understanding responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER.
Certification and Assessment
To qualify, candidates must pass three distinct assessments:
Written Theory Test: A multiple-choice exam on safety and operational codes.
Pre-Use Inspection Test: A practical demonstration of mandatory machine safety checks.
Basic Operating Skills Test: A practical assessment of maneuvering and load handling, typically allowing for no more than 40 penalty points.
Successful delegates are registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS) and receive an RTITB eCertificate and eCard valid for three years.
