mews training course

RTITB Cherry Picker training is a formal course designed for operators of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in the 3B category (Mobile Boom). This accreditation ensures operators meet legal safety standards, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Course Types and Duration

Training duration depends on the candidate's existing experience level:

Novice Course: Designed for total beginners; typically lasts up to 5 days.

Experienced Course: For operators with 12+ months of experience but no formal certification.

Refresher Course: A 1-day session for currently certified operators to renew their registration.

Conversion Course: For operators already certified on other equipment (e.g., scissor lifts) to gain boom lift certification.

Core Learning Objectives

As of 2026, RTITB courses use updated materials that reflect the latest workplace transport equipment groupings to ensure continued compliance. Key areas include:

Safety Law & Theory: Understanding operator responsibilities, LOLER/PUWER regulations, and hazard identification (e.g., overhead obstructions and ground conditions).

Pre-Use Inspection: Conducting vital daily checks on the power source, structural parts, and hydraulic systems to ensure the machine is in good working order.

Practical Operation: Learning to start, stop, and maneuver the machine. Unlike scissor lifts (3A), this training focuses on the unique reach and extension of mobile booms.

Emergency Procedures: Training in the use of emergency controls and rescue plans.

Harness Safety: Instruction on the correct selection, inspection, and wearing of safety harnesses and lanyards, which are often mandatory for boom-type MEWPs.

Assessment and Certification

Candidates must successfully pass both a written theory test and a practical skills assessment. Successful delegates are:

Registered on the National Operator Registration Scheme (NORS).

Issued an RTITB certificate and eCard, typically valid for 3 years.
